Energy Benchmarking & Building Performance Reporting for Maryland Buildings
Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) establish energy performance requirements for covered buildings throughout the state. The program is designed to reduce overall energy consumption and decrease direct greenhouse gas emissions from onsite fossil fuel use.
The first step toward compliance is reporting building energy consumption and operational information through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Based on reported performance, buildings that meet established standards may not require additional action, while buildings that do not meet the standards may need to implement improvements during the five-year compliance cycle.
Zenith Net-Zero helps building owners navigate Maryland BEPS requirements by managing the reporting process from data collection through submission.
Who Must Comply?
Maryland BEPS generally applies to:
✔ Buildings 35,000 gross square feet or larger (excluding parking garage areas)
✔ Large commercial buildings
✔ Multifamily residential buildings
✔ State-owned covered buildings
Covered properties are required to report building information, including:
✔ Property type and gross floor area
✔ Operating hours
✔ Occupancy information
✔ Energy consumption data
✔ Utility meter information
✔ Non-utility supplied fuel details
Some properties may be exempt from BEPS requirements, including certain historic properties, public and non-public elementary and secondary schools, and facilities primarily used for agriculture or manufacturing.
